A really great pair of drop earrings in sterling silver with a unique shape. The pear shaped turquoise tops are a nice size - not tiny and not huge- in a really pretty shade of sky blue. They are outlined by a rope texture decorating the outside of their bezels.
The naja drops below have a star shaped stud decorating the top of each arch. Naja is a Diné word meaning “crescent”, but the shape of the naja goes back to the middle ages when the Moors invaded Spain and brought this design to the Iberian Peninsula. The Spanish used the crescent shape on their horses bridles and it was thought to be a protective talisman.
To follow the path of how this symbol has evolved is a long and winding story of a design that has been used by lots of different cultures throughout centuries. From the Moors to the Spanish to Mexican and Navajo silversmiths who interpreted it in the squash blossom design we all know now. I think it’s so interesting that over time, this ancient motif has morphed into the lucky horseshoe motif we all know today. A classic and simple shape, here we see it updated with a western feel and adorned with gorgeous turquoises.
