Bloodstone & Carnelian Fob
Bloodstone & Carnelian Fob
An unusual antique fob in a triangular shape that gives three looks in one unique pendant! Depending on your mood or outfit, you can wear the fob with the carnelian, bloodstone or the gold side facing out. A workhorse and a chameleon, all in one rad piece!
This fob was made during the Victorian era, (1837-1901). The Victorians were very romantic, symbolic and sentimental, and their jewelry played a storytelling role in their every day life. This fob would have been worn at the end of a watch chain as a decorative counter weight to a pocket watch. On the practical side, there is a nice sense of balance between the two gemstones, and both are also a smart choice for an every day piece as they are quite hard and durable. On the more symbolic side of things, bloodstone is said to be a protective stone that provides courage, while carnelian brings energy and liveliness to the wearer. The decorative scrollwork along the top of the piece has a shield detail which adds to the overall protective and grounded feeling.
The bloodstone slab has the lovely contrasting signature red speckles the gemstone is prized for, which correspond nicely to the carnelian side, which is a vibrant orangey-red. The bloodstone and carnelian squares are each in great shape, there is one tiny chip on one corner on the bloodstone that is only noticeable under magnification.
Overall the fob is in good antique condition for being over 125 years of age. The gold section has a few dents and one arm of the frame is slightly dented, but this does not detract from the overall look of the piece. Very faint British hallmarks are almost worn away, but you can just make out the 9ct stamp if you look closely.
The fob rotates nicely in its setting and kind of settles and "locks in" with the bloodstone panel facing down. This is a perfect fidget spinner for an antique jewelry lover who'd love a chunky utilitarian piece with a past. A solid workhorse of a pendant with the ability to literally morph and match whatever look or energy the day calls for!
